We all know a great garden when we see one, whether it’s a green and earthy space with wood effects like our terrace oak tiles, or a sleek entertaining area featuring dark tiles like our Glencoe range. From marble and graphite to square and rectangle, create your perfect outdoor living area with our outdoor tiles collection.

Made from 20mm thick porcelain, our exterior and patio tiles are more durable than natural flagstones or timber decking and won’t crack in colder weather. What’s more, all of our exterior tiles feature excellent slip ratings to give you and your family peace underfoot, especially when it’s wet.

Outdoor Tiles FAQ

Which tiles are best to use outside?

We always recommend using 20mm porcelain tiles with an R11 slip rating outside. Unlike ceramic tiles or natural stone, these slabs are incredibly strong, durable and virtually water-proof. They’re designed to stand up to the elements, ensuring your garden looks it’s best year round, whatever the weather.

What are the benefits of outdoor tiles?

By their nature, 20mm porcelain slabs are low maintenance and easy to live with. The many benefits of porcelain tiles include:

  1. They don’t require regular sealing or special care to maintain their finish
  2. Water and frost-resistant
  3. Won’t crack, fade or deteriorate over time
  4. Easy to install
  5. Can prevent moss and algae growth

How long will outdoor tiles last?

Installed correctly, there’s no reason why outdoor tiles shouldn’t last for decades - or even longer. Because they’re so tough and non-porous, they’re difficult to scratch or wear away, even after years of heavy foot traffic and extreme weather conditions such as snow, frost and high temperatures.

How easy are outdoor tiles to install?

One of the advantages of 20mm porcelain slabs is the variety of ways they can be installed. You can choose to fix them permanently in place onto a concrete slab or traditional sand/cement screed. Alternatively, you can also choose to lay them loose or onto pedestals, which is a great option if you’re planning to lay the tiles yourself. This means you can also take the tiles with you, should you move home in the future!

How easy are outdoor tiles to maintain?

Compared to Indian sandstones or natural decking, outdoor porcelain tiles are remarkably easy to care for. Being non-porous, water and organic matter can’t penetrate into the surface, so you don’t need to worry about spills or stains that are impossible to remove. We recommend a regular ‘quick sweep’ to brush away and dirt or leaves, with seasonal cleans using specialist cleaning products to remove any organic matter such as algae and moss.

Do I need to seal my outdoor tiles?

Unlike natural materials such as stone and timber, our porcelain pavers don’t need to be treated or sealed. However, some outdoor tiles do have a gritty or textured surface, which grout and brush-in jointing compounds can stick to. Sealing the surface of the tiles with our Porcelain Tile Protector before applying these products will prevent any potential issues and help ensure the tiles are very easy to care for.

Where can I use outdoor tiles?

Our porcelain pavers are extremely versatile and can be used throughout your garden and outdoor space. Naturally, they’re a very popular choice for patios and back yards, especially if you have bi-fold patio doors opening onto your terrace. However, they can also be used to create stepping stones across your lawn or laid around swimming pools or hot tubs.

Do outdoor tiles fade?

Unlike other materials, our porcelain pavers are extremely unlikely to fade over time, whether that’s from direct sunlight, general weathering or heavy foot traffic. During production, they’re fired at extremely high temperatures which creates a surface that’s strong, durable and resistant to ultra-violet rays.

Can outdoor tiles be laid on concrete?

Our porcelain pavers can be installed onto a solid concrete bed using a porcelain tile adhesive. The concrete slab will need to be solid and fully cured, with an appropriate fall away from any buildings. We recommend a minimum thickness of 50mm.

Are outdoor tiles slippery when wet?

Given our damp climate, a natural concern you may have is how slippery your new patio may be, especially when it’s wet. The good news is that all of our outdoor tiles feature a certified R11 slip rating, giving you added grip underfoot. A slope should always be designed into your terrace, to help drain rainwater away and we recommend that tiles are regular cleaned to remove any moss or organic matter which can become slippery. You should always exercise further caution during extreme weather conditions, such as frost, heavy rainfall or strong winds.
