The bathrooms at the newly reopened Fleming Hotel are a great place to start. After all this luxury lodge is slap bang in the middle of Hong Kong island - a city that’s known for being a design-lover’s dream. But with the sky-high skyline come sky-high rents; and naturally, bathrooms are more on the bijou side than breezy. Not that any of this mattered to A Work of Substance, the design firm tasked with refurbishing the Fleming. Taking cues from the city’s maritime heritage, they’ve paired sumptuous bottle-green tiles with warm bronze fittings for a modern twist on steampunk style. Modern Marble
Despite being located in the attic of a converted Parisian mansion, this bathroom’s elegant palette - white marble tiles, deck-mounted washbasin and chrome fittings - is the epitome of cosmopolitan chic. The bath is cleverly sited under the eaves with just enough room to stand in the window for a shower with a view. Tiling the whole space in the same material increases the feeling of space - polished tiles help bounce light around the room. The designer used the existing elements to her advantage, leaving the chimney breast exposed to add texture and warmth. A tried and tested way to add life to a small space is by letting loose with pattern. Narrow, awkward spaces can be really conducive to modern wetrooms, as this en-suite in a converted East London warehouse shows. Here, the limited width and low window sill makes fitting a tub quite tricky; on the other hand, it’s perfect for a walk-in shower. But what really makes this space work is the bold hue; the dark graphite tiles are a nod to the building’s industrial heritage and make the room feel far more cosy and cocooning than plain white tiles would.
