We recently took a look at bathroom tile trends for the year ahead and one image in particular really struck a chord - we’ve been inundated with requests for the bottle green tiles shown in the cover photo. And while we don’t yet sell that particular design, we’ve been inspired to look at the top ten tiles for small bathroom spaces. You see, while bathrooms tend to be among the smallest rooms at home, they can still pack a big punch when it comes to looking good. Less wall space means you can splash out on something really special - a bold patterned tile or marble mosaics, for example. So without further ado, let’s take a closer look at our best tile choices for small bathrooms.

Go To Green

The bathrooms at the newly reopened Fleming Hotel are a great place to start. After all this luxury lodge is slap bang in the middle of Hong Kong island - a city that’s known for being a design-lover’s dream. But with the sky-high skyline come sky-high rents; and naturally, bathrooms are more on the bijou side than breezy. Not that any of this mattered to A Work of Substance, the design firm tasked with refurbishing the Fleming. Taking cues from the city’s maritime heritage, they’ve paired sumptuous bottle-green tiles with warm bronze fittings for a modern twist on steampunk style. The cosy, intimate space is just the trick for recovering after a long flight - you can get the look at home with our Crackle Bottle Green wall tiles.

Modern Marble

Despite being located in the attic of a converted Parisian mansion, this bathroom’s elegant palette - white marble tiles, deck-mounted washbasin and chrome fittings - is the epitome of cosmopolitan chic. The bath is cleverly sited under the eaves with just enough room to stand in the window for a shower with a view. Tiling the whole space in the same material increases the feeling of space - polished tiles help bounce light around the room. Our Timeless White porcelain tiles will give you a similar five-star look, without the expense of real Carrara. And because they're full of gorgeous grey veining, these tiles don't get into that cold territory like some whites can.

Dark Drama

We’ve all dreamed of adding an en-suite bathroom but unfortunately, extra space is usually hard to come by, especially in older properties. But if you’ve got an awkward area next to your bedroom, why not ditch the idea of a bath in favour of a modern wetroom? In this hotel bathroom in Italy, the architects have embraced the small space and opted for all-over dark tiles. The moody atmosphere is softened by the lighter feature wall and bright yellow washstand.

Handmade Heaven

Located in a Victorian school conversion in London, this teeny-tiny bathroom manages to squeeze in all the essentials. The designer used the existing elements to her advantage, leaving the chimney breast exposed to add texture and warmth. This charm is echoed in the handmade tiles around the bath; it’s a cosy space that’s ideal for relaxing in after a long busy day. Our Atelier Green ceramic wall tiles are a close match.

Snazzy Tiles

A tried and tested way to add life to a small space is by letting loose with pattern. Both bathrooms below feature statement decorative tiles that elevate the eye; keeping the rest of the room relatively plain allows these walls and floors to steal the spotlight. The second image is a home in Hollywood that uses our Tapestry Blue tiles to dramatic effect - add brass fittings for a premiere finish.

Raw Beauty

Narrow, awkward spaces can be really conducive to modern wetrooms, as this en-suite in a converted East London warehouse shows. Here, the limited width and low window sill makes fitting a tub quite tricky; on the other hand, it’s perfect for a walk-in shower. But what really makes this space work is the bold hue; the dark graphite tiles are a nod to the building’s industrial heritage and make the room feel far more cosy and cocooning than plain white tiles would. Choose a rectified large format tile such as Cemento Mid Grey 75 x 75 cm for a more seamless finish that enhances the illusion of space.

Blue Swoon

Got a small bathroom that needs a little lift? Tiles are one of the most effective ways to rejuvenate a space and you don’t necessarily need to retile the whole room. In this dinky en-suite, immersive blue metro tiles have been used to create an soulful shower enclosure. They help to ramp up interest in what could otherwise be a relatively plain decor and the classic brick-bond layout helps fool you into thinking the room is wider than it actually is. Clean Cut

When it comes to small bathrooms, there’s a school of thought that white is always right. We’re inclined to agree. If you’re squeezed for space or low on natural light, keeping things pale and simple will ensure your room feels inviting and warm, not cold and unfriendly. For a little extra eye-candy, ditch the classic white metro tiles and combine two sizes of the same design - our Elements range will do the trick. Keep the rest of your decor crisp and clean and add pops of colour with a few well-chosen accessories.

Neutral Nuances

Why book an expensive boutique hotel when you can enjoy spa-style pampering in the comfort of your own home? Creating an indulgent bathroom is easier than you might think - just take some stone effect tiles that are easy on the eye and you’re well on the way. Match the grout to your tile colour to create a more seamless look that will enhance the sense of space. And if possible, opt for wall-hung furniture to make your room appear larger.

Wood and White

While white on white is great, wood on white is arguably better. Want proof? Just ask our Danish friends - they’re well known for their love of natural timber and whitewashed designs. So take a leaf out of their style guides and finish your small bathroom in white metro tiles and wood effect planks for the full-on hygge effect. It’s a look that’s guaranteed to turn cramped into cosy. Best of all, white metro tiles are incredibly affordable so while the design is high, the cost is low.
