Let’s face it. Who hasn’t stayed at a hotel and experienced some bathroom envy! The best hotel bathrooms cover all the practical requirements with efficiency and elegance, but also add personal touches and a certain style. However, upgrading your own bathroom to four-star standards may be easier and more cost-effective than you think.

Why not draw inspiration from the recently refurbished Nobis Hotel in Copenhagen? Here all 100 rooms offer enviable and luxurious bathrooms; the epitome of Scandinavian elegance. The chic minimalist design creates the perfect pampering and relaxing environment.

Nobis Hotel

One of the main features of each bathrooms is a large bathtub surrounded by marble tiles, as shown above. A large single mirror is positioned above the dark framed vanity unit, reflecting light back into the room.

The shower cubicle maintains the minimalist feeling, as it is enclosed by a sleek sheet of glass. The water falls from the oversized shower head bouncing on the tiles beneath, before disappearing into the bespoke single drain. 80 of the 100 Nobis Hotels’ bathrooms feature Unidrain’s linear drains. Here, the classic steel Unidrain grating has been replaced with the same marble as the rest of the bathroom, making the drain almost invisible to the eye.

Getting The Look At Home

Unidrain worked in conjunction with their architectural advisor, Dennis Bagge, to ensure that the hotel’s every requirement was met. For example twenty of the bathrooms needed extra-long drains. These tailor-made solutions really help to create the desired aesthetic. But this look need not break the bank.

Apart from Unidrain’s linear drains, add impact with the 1,555mm Verona Freestanding Modern Bath.

Double-ended and with a striking curved design, this bath from Victorian Plumbing is formed from 4 to 6mm thick acrylic. And if this bath does not suit, various other sizes are available.

Basin

You can also achieve a similar vanity-style basin configuration for under £200 with a Mode Scher white countertop drawer unit, below left. Mounted on black steel legs, and with a durable high gloss white finish, this semi-wall-hung design comes from Victoria Plum.

For those with a larger budget, push the boat out with a Burlington Edwardian basin with Regal Height chrome washstand, below right, from Drench. Available with a choice of 1, 2 or 3 tap holes, the basin is made from vitreous china and the washstand of brass. Your house guests will turn green eyed with this hotel-at-home beauty.

Accessories

Accessories really dress a bathroom like this, but again need not cost a packet.

Take the round feature mirror. Maison du Monde offers the D81 Lucas round metal mirror for a shade over £80. 20mm deep and 810mm wide, this metal-framed beauty will have just the impact required, but at only 7.2kg, is simple to fix.

Or go the extra mile with the Canda round mirror with bronze metal frame from Arsanti. This perfectly round mirror is the epitome of elegant refinement and, at 1,200mm, is perfect for a larger wall, spreading light and creating a sense of space in any room. A dark bronze band creates minimal contrast, like a thin pencil line drawn around the mirrored glass. The 60mm deep mirror is hung by a central keyhole fitting. Smaller sizes are also available.

Tiles

But, of course, the true beauty of the Nobis Hotel bathrooms lies in the choice of tiles. At Porcelain Superstore we have a number of ranges that can deliver similar design impact and tonal balance.

Lakeland Grey, at just £25.44 per sq. metre, offers an ideal variegated yet monolithic look. These 310 by 610mm tiles have the perfect dimensions for most UK bathrooms. Made in Spain, this elegant porcelain range was inspired by beautiful natural slate from the Lake District. The 9mm thick tiles can be used on both floor and walls; ideally with a 3mm grout joint, as shown below left.

Swoon

[/stnsvn-col-2][/stnsvn-col-row]

Or add real drama to your bathroom with our drop-dead Swoon Black, above right. At under £49 per sq. metre, these 165 by 165mm tiles capture the essence of Nero Marquina marble. This exquisite stone has long been at the forefront of fashion. Swoon Black provides a fresh take on this beloved material in a square format that is ideal for modern bathroom makeovers. These 7mm thick porcelain tiles are also suitable for both floor and walls, allowing you to create that desirable all-over look.

Our third suggestion is more restrained but just a restful and engaging. Motion Grey, under £30 per sq. metre, is a classic 300 by 600mm grey porcelain tile.

Motion Grey Tiles

Contemporary yet eminently practical, it will add a modern vibe to any bathroom. The subtle movement of the surface, combined with a slightly uneven honed texture, delivers tactile allure in spades. Again 9mm thick, these tiles can also be used on both floors and walls, and look at their very best with a narrow 2mm grout joint.

Put all these elements together and your home can soon boast a touch of 4-star hotel luxury that will still leave money in the bank!
